The Importance of Whey Protein on Children's Weight Loss

Finding ways for children to successfully lose weight while not making them feel like they are on a strict diet can be difficult. Using whey protein as part of a child's weight loss program can help make the task less difficult.

Because whey protein is usually found in a powdered form, it can be easily added to many foods. Often it is undetected which is important since children tend to be picky eaters.

How does whey protein aid in a child's weight loss? There are four ways.

First, any protein uses more energy to digest than other types of foods. A food with whey protein added to it takes more calories to digest and therefore may help a child loose weight.

Secondly, whey protein helps to build lean muscle tissue. Muscle helps to burn fat. Also, if a child's body doesn't regularly receive protein, it will take protein from lean muscle. The loss of lean muscle will mean the child may gain weight. Whey protein can assist in both the weight loss process and the maintenance of current weight.

Thirdly, whey protein may help reduce insulin levels in the bloodstream by slowing down the absorption of glucose. In this way, whey protein can act as an appetite suppressant because hunger is reduced.

Finally, all proteins, including whey proteins, seem to help a person feel fuller when finished eating. They also keep a person feeling full longer. The use of whey protein in a child's diet may discourage snacking between meals.
